“I expected a simple weekend hike, but Prashar Lake surprised me. The floating island, peaceful temple and mountain views made it feel much bigger than the distance we walked.”

The Prashar Lake Trek follows a well-defined mountain trail beginning from Kantlu Village. The route alternates between dirt paths, stone-paved village tracks, pine and oak forests, grassy meadows and a few moderately steep climbs. There are no technical sections or exposed ridges, making it suitable for fit beginners. During winter the trail is often covered in snow, increasing the difficulty and requiring careful footing.
Spring and early summer bring pleasant temperatures with green forests and clear Himalayan views. The monsoon months can make the trail slippery due to mud and rain, while winter transforms the route into a snowy landscape with freezing nights and frequent sub-zero temperatures. Snowfall is common from late December through February, and fresh snow can slow the pace considerably.
Although the maximum altitude is only around 2,730 metres, the trek involves nearly 900 metres of ascent from the trailhead in a single day. Most trekkers complete the climb comfortably with regular breaks and proper hydration. Altitude sickness is uncommon but mild breathlessness can be felt by people who ascend too quickly.
The trail passes through mixed forests of pine, oak and deodar before opening into rolling meadows near the lake. Depending on the season, trekkers may spot Himalayan langurs, colourful Himalayan birds and, with luck, the Himalayan monal. Near the lake, panoramic views stretch across the Dhauladhar, Pir Panjal and Kinnaur mountain ranges.
March – June
The trail turns green with blooming rhododendrons and pleasant daytime temperatures. Clear mornings and colourful forests make this one of the most popular seasons for first-time trekkers.
July – August
The hills become intensely green, but frequent rain can make the trail slippery and reduce mountain views. Check weather forecasts carefully before planning a trek during this season.
September – November
Post-monsoon skies are usually at their clearest, offering excellent views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Comfortable temperatures and stable weather make this another excellent trekking season.
December – February
Fresh snowfall transforms Prashar Lake into a beautiful winter landscape. Expect cold temperatures, snow on the trail and slower trekking conditions, but also some of the most memorable scenery.
Required: No
No trekking permit is generally required for the standard Kantlu–Prashar Lake route. Follow local forest and temple guidelines, and camping restrictions near the lake if notified by authorities.
The nearest major medical facilities are in Mandi. Local guides and forest staff may be available around the lake during busy seasons, but mobile connectivity is unreliable, so inform someone of your itinerary before starting.
