This journey is primarily along the Manali–Leh Highway with short walks at viewpoints, monasteries and riversides. The road is fully paved for most of the route through Atal Tunnel, Sissu and Keylong, though occasional broken patches, landslide zones and water crossings appear after heavy rain or snowmelt. The route is suitable for beginners but requires long hours of mountain driving.
The drive climbs rapidly from Manali at around 2,050 m to Jispa at approximately 3,200 m. Some visitors experience mild headaches or breathlessness due to the quick altitude gain. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol on the first night and keep physical activity light after reaching Jispa.
Summer days are pleasantly cool while mornings and evenings remain cold even in June. From late September onward, temperatures drop sharply after sunset. Winter brings heavy snowfall, road closures and freezing conditions around Keylong and Jispa.
Mountain weather changes quickly and afternoon snowmelt can increase water crossings. Leave Manali early in the morning to avoid traffic and unstable afternoon road conditions. Always check the latest road status before departure during shoulder seasons.
May – October
Roads are generally open, the valleys are green after snowmelt, and daytime temperatures are comfortable for sightseeing. This is the most reliable season for visiting Jispa and Keylong.
November – April
The region experiences freezing temperatures and frequent snowfall. Road closures are possible, especially beyond Keylong, so flexible travel plans are essential.
Required: No
No trekking permit is generally required for Indian visitors travelling via the Atal Tunnel. Rohtang Pass route may require seasonal vehicle permits if the tunnel is not used. Foreign nationals should carry passport and visa documents.
Keylong has the nearest major hospital, police station and fuel station. Emergency assistance becomes limited beyond Keylong, so inform someone about your travel plan before departure.
