The Brahmatal Trek begins through old oak and rhododendron forests before gradually climbing to open meadows and long ridgelines. In winter, much of the trail is covered in packed snow, while spring replaces white slopes with blooming rhododendrons. The final approach involves moderate uphill sections, exposed ridges and panoramic viewpoints rather than technical climbing.
Starting from Lohajung at around 7,700 ft, the trek gradually climbs over three days to about 12,250 ft. Camps are spaced to provide gradual acclimatization, making it suitable for fit beginners. Even so, reduced oxygen, cold winds and dehydration can trigger mild altitude symptoms if trekkers climb too quickly or neglect hydration.
December through March offers deep snow, frozen lakes and temperatures that frequently fall below freezing at night. March and April combine lingering snow with blooming rhododendrons and clearer skies. Daytime temperatures are generally comfortable while mornings and evenings remain cold enough to require multiple warm layers.
The route passes dense oak and rhododendron forests before emerging into alpine bugyals and ridges overlooking the Garhwal Himalaya. Lucky trekkers may spot Himalayan monal, langurs, fox tracks and musk deer signs. Throughout the trek, Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba, Neelkanth and Hathi-Ghoda peaks dominate the skyline.
December – February
This is the classic Brahmatal experience with frozen lakes, snow-covered forests, and white campsites. Expect cold nights, clear mountain views after fresh snowfall, and the best chance to walk on deep snow.
March – April
Snow remains on higher sections while lower forests begin turning green with blooming rhododendrons. Days become more comfortable, making this a great choice for beginners who want both snow and pleasant trekking weather.
July – September
Heavy rainfall makes the trail slippery and clouds often hide the mountain views. Most organized departures do not operate during this period.
October – November
The forests are clear and the weather is stable, but significant snowfall has usually not arrived yet. Only limited departures may operate depending on trail conditions.
Required: Yes
Forest entry permits are mandatory and are normally arranged by the trek operator. Trekkers should carry a government photo ID and passport-size photographs. Foreign nationals may need additional identification documents.
The nearest roadhead is Lohajung. Rescue is generally coordinated by trek leaders and local support staff. The nearest major medical facilities are at Dewal and Karnaprayag, while severe emergencies may require evacuation to larger hospitals.
