Overview

updateUpdated 14 Jul 2026

  • ▲The Bagini Glacier Trek is one of the quieter high-altitude adventures in Uttarakhand, following an ancient shepherd trail from Jumma through the historic village of Dronagiri into the outer Nanda Devi region. Unlike the state's more crowded routes, this trek feels wonderfully remote from the very first day. Every campsite sits closer to the great granite walls of Changabang, Kalanka, Dunagiri and Trishul, with the landscape becoming wilder as forests give way to alpine meadows and glacial moraine.
  • ▲The final approach to Bagini Glacier is what makes this trek unforgettable. Instead of standing on a single summit, you spend hours walking beside the glacier while enormous Himalayan peaks dominate every direction. Changabang's steep rock faces, the icy flanks of Kalanka and the massive Dunagiri ridge feel close enough to touch. Photographers, experienced trekkers and mountaineering enthusiasts often choose Bagini Glacier because it offers some of the finest close-up mountain views in the Garhwal Himalayas without technical climbing.
  • ▲The trail also has a fascinating cultural side. Dronagiri village, known from local legends connected with the Ramayana, is one of the oldest settlements in the region. Stone houses, traditional temples and seasonal shepherd camps remind you that people have travelled these valleys for centuries. Higher up, the only sounds are glacial streams, mountain winds and the occasional call of Himalayan birds.
  • ▲Bagini Glacier is best visited during May and June for lingering snowfields or September and October for crystal-clear mountain views after the monsoon. Both seasons offer stable trekking conditions, while the monsoon months can bring landslides on the approach road and winter usually closes the route under heavy snow.

Technical Overview

terrain

A True Himalayan Glacier Approach

The trail begins on village footpaths before entering dense forests and alpine grazing grounds. Beyond Dronagiri the route becomes increasingly rocky with loose moraine, glacial debris and stream crossings. The final approach to Bagini Glacier involves boulder hopping and uneven ground where careful footing is essential. Trekking poles are strongly recommended for stability.

info

Altitude and Acclimatization

The trek climbs from around 2,800 metres at Jumma to nearly 4,900 metres near Bagini Glacier. Sleeping altitude increases gradually, helping acclimatization, but the final camps are high enough for Acute Mountain Sickness symptoms to appear. Hydration, slow pacing and avoiding unnecessary exertion are key. Anyone with persistent headache, nausea or breathlessness should descend immediately.

ac_unit

Weather Conditions

Spring and autumn offer the most stable weather with clear mountain views and comfortable daytime temperatures. Nights at higher camps regularly fall below freezing, even in May and October. Afternoon clouds and brief snowfall are possible at any time above base camp. Layering is essential because temperatures change quickly through the day.

info

Landscape and Wildlife

Lower sections pass through traditional Garhwali villages, terraced fields and forests of oak, deodar and rhododendron. Higher up, alpine meadows give way to barren moraine and glacial terrain surrounded by towering peaks. Lucky trekkers may spot Himalayan monal, bharal, Himalayan griffons and marmots in the alpine zone. The region remains sparsely populated and remarkably wild.

When to Visit

calendar_today

Snowfields and comfortable trekking

May – June

Snow often remains near the glacier while lower valleys turn green with alpine flowers. This is the best choice if you want a mix of snow walking and pleasant daytime temperatures.

calendar_today

Unpredictable conditions

July – August

Heavy rainfall frequently affects the approach road to Jumma with landslides and slippery trails. Most organized departures avoid this period.

calendar_today

Crystal-clear mountain views

September – October

Fresh post-monsoon air creates outstanding visibility of Changabang, Kalanka, Dunagiri and Trishul. Cool temperatures and stable weather make this the favourite season for photographers.

ac_unit

Heavy snowfall

November – April

The upper valley receives deep snow and the trek is generally not operated. Access to the glacier becomes difficult and conditions are suitable only for specialized expeditions.
